Time Stops at Shamli and Other Stories Book Cover
Its been quite a long time, I had read this book written by Ruskin bond. I selected this book randomly from fictional novel shelf of my library and felt it to be really good. Ruskin Bond is a popular writer and I’m a fan of his oeuvre as I've read, this one and Maharani. This book is an aggregation of many short stories from his experience
which he witnesses in the hills of Mussorie and even fiction stories. An amazingly interesting book completed within 2 days, best thing to read in your pastimes. The most appealing thing which I discovered with these books that, novels are not always available with a single story but they can exist even with a plethora of it. JUST AMAZING!!

Now coming to the contents of the book, first short story was about how a small boy went through, at a time when his only parent died, I reckon that it was his own life story. He expressed the feelings and the environment in detail that it felt like as if I was watching a movie. How people are superficial and how the small boy didn't understand anything but still missed his dad badly.

There are many stories wherein he tells about supernatural encounters and horror scenes. They weren't that really scary but enjoyable. Then the story which is the name of the book ''time stops at Shamli'' is illustrated beautifully. It talks about an encounter of writer with his old female friend in a very different way which one can never think of, really a good read. Also, there is a story which talks about a Sardar who drives truck for a living and his employee working at the mines in the hills of Mussorie , his observation about the ''overexploitation of nature'' which after a fatal accident changed his mind.

I was surprised to know that one of my favourite childhood story, that is a story on tiger which I had read in 9th standard English textbook is also included, was actually written by Ruskin bond. What a Genius! Its about Timothy the Tiger leading to a sad and astounding end, was the reason I still remember it till this date. This story was very fascinating for me and I enjoyed reading it ''again''.

What I found fascinating about this book is its all encompassing nature, has chunks of environment conservation, childhood, love, ghost, Indian-ess etc.Overall the book is very interesting , will not make you bore. Makes you feel like you are in the hills of Mussorie and has a cooling effect. One can easily be lost in translation by reading the book. This not only describes the beautiful hilly environment but also shows the negative effect of scientific advancement over the region which degraded the hills and took away its beauty. The number and pride of tigers are also diminishing can be derived from his stories. I would recommend this book who is a  Ruskin Bond fan or want to visit the beautiful hills through a book or even pass some time and gain interesting stuff from it.
