Review of the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee / Everything bee knows

To kill a mockingbird

The most recommended book ever and an American classic surely keeps up its name. I didn’t know much authors, being a beginner, so I searched the Internet for most recommended and must read books. This book was on top of the list. I got this book and it has a different structure and writing to understand for a beginner like me. But I understood and that’s a great thing.

The story is narrated by Jean Louis Finch aka Scout who is a small girl, living with her brother and father, she is 6 years old or so, who’s always taunted by her aunt for not being lady like more like a tom boy. Her mother died when she was small and can’t recall any memories of hers; she gets to know about her from her elder brother. They lived in a very remote town where some neighbors are harmonious and some are bitter. During summer holidays her friend ‘Dill’ would visit his aunt and was very close to Scout and her brother. Once he had ran away from his house to meet them. The starting part is all about her summer vacations and how the main character scout, her brother and her friend keeps on irritating Bob the murderer guy; about whom the mystery reveals at the end which is very amusing.

This book talks about racial discrimination that would happen in America and how innocent people due to their skin colour put behind the bars and killed without any reason. Even the judicial system was so biased ,the people related to it wanted justice but the hypocrite and racial society would go against to it and this is depicted through the curiosity of lil' girl scout the narrator from her whole life happenings. One must be skeptical as to the title of the book and what it means well it is mentioned in the story about that scout’s father tells his son practice gunning and advices his son to not kill or shoot a mockingbird because it doesn’t cause any problem to anyone. And after reading the book you will know it’s used metaphorically. As the title of the book suggest to kill a mockingbird, the story is about killing the innocent for invalid reasons or for own sake.

The type of writing and language used was not familiar to me as I'm not American. But after 20-30 pages I got used to it. Fabulous storytelling, I liked the court scene and the ending part the most. In between I thought it was kind of slow and boring but then it picks up after those parts. The structure of the story was arranged very meticulously. All the characters were very different and independently strong and the book was very interesting to read because of good mix of all these components. This book is sure shot a page turner and never makes you stop reading. I won't rate this book with honeybees as this is one of the classics and which shows the reverence it deserves. have a good day and keep smilling and reading. : )
